This summer I spent ten glorious days in the Ardèche area. We had the opportunity to stay at a friend’s vacation house. Her parents had bought it in the 60s and had lived there every summer until recently. It is a beautiful old farmhouse, a little modernized but not too much. Running hot water is as far as it gets. There is a big outside kitchen and an outside shower, a big living room with an open fireplace and three big bedrooms. I want to go back badly. It was heaven.
The surrounding landscape is mountainous, quite rough in the higher parts, and divided by several river valleys. The river Ardèche cut a deep canyon into the rocks, quite a spectacular view from the curvy road that runs alongside it. The clear, crisp mountain water is perfect for swimming on a hot day, and along the entire river canoes can be rented.
The little villages along the rivers are beautiful, very original and peaceful.
